Helping Hands elects new Board and President

Robert Peace is the new president of Helping Hands Sault Ste. Marie.

"I am truly honored and humbled to serve as the president of this remarkable organization," Peace said in a news release issued by the organization. "Sault Ste. Marie Helping Hands has a long history of making a tangible impact on the lives of those who need it most, and I am excited to build on that legacy."

Peace is described as "a dedicated community leader known for his commitment to serving others."

"We all know our community is facing some tough times," he said. "More students are struggling to make ends meet, families are working hard but still can’t keep up with the rising costs, especially the skyrocketing rent prices. And on top of that, we’re in the middle of a drug crisis like we’ve never seen, pushing more of our neighbours onto the streets every day. Our work is about helping people, and we have a responsibility to make a positive difference in the lives of those who rely on us ."

The mission of Helping Hands is to support the community by caring and sharing donations of household items and basic needs to improve the lives of many, the release added. The president/chairman role was left vacant after the resignation of founder Wendy Gutcher in August 2023. 

Peace will be calling on both Sault College and Algoma University to meet in the coming weeks to discuss what can be done to better prepare students and families before they arrive or make their decisions to come to Sault Ste Marie. 

"The amazing thing is, look around at who we have at our meeting tonight and the volunteers in our store," said Peace. "Dozens of newcomers to the Soo! They are not only helping each other but helping the long time residents of the Soo by volunteering their time week after week here at Helping Hands and elsewhere." 

VP Elizabeth MacMillan remains in her post along with board member John Korab. Newly elected is Bruna Gomes - a newcomer to the area from Brazil, who takes on the role of director of volunteers and store operations. Brendan Garlick was elected treasurer.
